The Taoiseach Micheal Martin is demanding that the €500 fine for people caught travelling abroad without it being for essential travel will see an increase up to €2,000 per person.

The current fine, €500, has been deemed not to be enough to discourage travelling abroad. Authorities say that around 60% of people arriving at Dublin Airport are Irish holidaymakers.

It is understood that the Government will discuss the penalty system over the next few days with the fine being implemented next week at the earliest.

The travel industry has said that they now need help from the government for their sector to survive the pandemic.
