An economy expert has warned that pubs could add as much as a euro onto the price of pints as well as introducing a €10 COVID surcharge on meals in order to recover financially from the hit taken during the lockdown.
Economics Professor and adviser to the Central Bank, Alan Ahearne, forecasts that this increase may be the only way out of the current economic crisis for restaurants and pubs and their thousands of employees.
His thoughts come just one day after the shocking revelation by Minister Simon Harris that bars could remain closed until a coronavirus vaccine has been discovered.
Mr Ahearne – who worked alongside the late finance minister Brian Lenihan in 2009 and advised him on the bailout from the troika – said: “It does look like social distancing will be with us for a very, very, long time until the vaccine arrives.
