Greece’s conservative government has announced that it will be deporting any illegal migrants who arrived on its territory after March 1st back to their home countries.
Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi announced late Wednesday evening that the government would be transferring all migrants who came to its territory illegally after the 1st of March to the city of Serres, where they then would be repatriated back to their home countries, Reuters reports.
Since February 28th, when Turkey announced that it would open its border and permit any and all migrants to pass through to reach continental Europe, thousands of migrants have made to Greece’s territory.

Speaking to Athens News Agency, Mitarachi said, “Our aim is to return them to their countries,” while noting that migrants who had entered Greece before January 1st, 2019 and who’ve been living on the Greek islands would be transferred to Greece’s mainland in the coming days.
On the first of this month, the Greek government announced that it would not be accepting any new asylum applications for at least a month in light of the foreign invasion that they’re facing at their southern border.
Earlier this week, the central European Visegrád nations – Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia – all pledged to support Greece at its southern border in the case that it needs it.
